With laser eye surgery, many people can enjoy clearer vision with less day-to-day hassle

Find out how laser vision correction works, who it may suit, and what to expect before, during and after treatment

Laser eye surgery may be suitable if you are over 18, have a stable glasses or contact lens prescription, and have healthy eyes. It can often help with short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism. Astigmatism means the eye is shaped more like a rugby ball than a football, which can blur vision. Suitability also depends on your corneal thickness, eye surface, prescription strength and general health. Some people are better suited to lens treatment or another option. A detailed consultation is needed before any decision is made. This helps your surgeon understand your eyes, lifestyle and goals.

Laser eye surgery works by reshaping the cornea, which is the clear front window of the eye. This helps light focus more accurately on the back of the eye, so vision becomes clearer. Different laser methods work in slightly different ways, but the aim is similar. The treatment is planned using detailed eye measurements taken before surgery. During treatment, numbing drops are used to keep the eyes comfortable. The laser then makes tiny changes to the cornea in a controlled way. The treatment itself is usually quick, but careful planning and follow-up are key parts of the process.

he main advantage of laser eye surgery is that it can reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses. This may make sport, travel, work and everyday tasks feel easier. Many people like the freedom of waking up and seeing more clearly without reaching for glasses. Treatment is usually quick, and recovery can be fast for suitable patients. However, laser eye surgery is not right for everyone. Some people may still need glasses for reading or certain tasks. Vision can take time to settle. Dry eyes, glare or halos may occur. Your surgeon will explain the benefits and limits clearly.

Laser eye surgery is widely used, but all surgery has risks. Possible side effects include dry eyes, glare, halos around lights, light sensitivity and changing vision during healing. Some people may need extra drops while the eyes recover. In some cases, vision may be under-corrected or over-corrected, which means the result is slightly less or more than planned. Further treatment may sometimes be needed. Serious complications are uncommon, but they can happen. A thorough examination helps reduce risk by checking if your eyes are suitable. Your surgeon will explain your personal risks before you decide to go ahead.

At Scandinavian Eye Centre, we offer two main types of laser eye surgery: LASIK and SMILE. LASIK involves creating a thin flap on the surface of the cornea, which is gently lifted so the laser can reshape the underlying tissue. The flap is then placed back in position, allowing for quick visual recovery. SMILE is a minimally invasive technique where a small piece of tissue is removed through a tiny incision, without creating a flap. This method may be suitable for certain prescriptions and can help preserve corneal strength.

If laser treatment is not the right option for you, an alternative may be implantable contact lenses, also known as ICL. This involves placing a lens inside the eye without removing the natural lens, offering another way to correct vision for suitable patients.

The first step is a detailed eye assessment. This checks your prescription, corneal shape, eye pressure, eye surface and general eye health. Your surgeon then explains whether laser eye surgery is suitable and which method may fit your eyes. On treatment day, numbing drops are placed in the eyes. The laser treatment is then carried out with careful guidance from the clinical team. After treatment, you will receive eye drops and clear instructions for recovery. Follow-up visits are important. They allow your team to check healing, answer questions and make sure your eyes are recovering as expected.

Results vary from person to person, but studies show that around 90–95% of patients achieve vision of 20/20 to 20/25 without glasses or contact lenses after laser eye surgery. Approximately 96–98% of patients report satisfaction with their results. Many people notice improved vision within 24–48 hours, although it can take several weeks for vision to fully stabilise.

Around 5–10% of patients may require a minor enhancement procedure to fine-tune the result. Some people may still need glasses for reading, especially after the age of 40, or for specific tasks such as night driving. Outcomes depend on factors such as your prescription, eye health, healing response and the type of treatment used. Your surgeon will explain what results are realistic for your eyes before treatment, so you can make an informed decision.
