Near and farsightedness

There are several methods to correct near and farsightedness. At Scandinavian Eye Center, we use Laser surgery with SMILE to correct myopia and laser surgery with LASIK and ICL-Implant to treat farsightedness.

Although eyesight can change with age, many are born with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The "error" in the eye is due to the cornea's curvature not being optimal in relation to the light being refracted and focused on the retina. That is why we get vision problems. With a laser operation, the ophthalmologist creates an optimal cornea curvature so that you can see clearly and become free of glasses. It can be a burden always to be bound by glasses or contact lenses. Sports and work can be hampered due to impaired vision.

In some patients, we cannot treat with laser; this may be due to thin corneas or a greater degree of farsightedness. In this case, we can treat with an ICL implant, a flexible lens inserted through a small incision in the eye. The ICL implant lies above the natural eye lens, making the treatment minimally invasive and reversible.

Many people dream of having eye surgery to get rid of their glasses or contact lenses. However, fear and lack of knowledge about eye surgery can sometimes prevent them from choosing the best solution to their vision problems. Sight is one of our most important senses, and thinking of something going wrong can make people hesitant. The truth is that eye surgery is a relatively simple and quick procedure, taking between 1 and 10 minutes depending on the type of surgery. It is also entirely painless, and the healing process is usually very fast. After the procedure, most people will notice an improvement in their vision within a few minutes, with significant improvement within a few days. In a few weeks, their vision will be fully healed, and they will no longer have to worry about poor vision.

Vision-correcting laser treatment has advanced significantly, producing results that often exceed patients' expectations for a life without glasses. At Scandinavian Eye Center, we offer various types of laser treatments.

Determining the appropriate treatment for an individual requires a thorough examination of the eye. We believe that the outcome, rather than the procedure, is the most important factor in achieving a successful operation. Therefore, it is always essential to conduct a preliminary evaluation and discussion to determine the optimal solution together.

Within laser treatment, two techniques have been used in particular in recent years - SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) and LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis).

Until recently, LASIK was considered the go-to laser treatment, but now, both surgical methods are considered equally effective. The SMILE technology is the newest and most gentle form of surgery. That is why we often use this method in the Scandinavian Eye Center. We provide LASIK treatment as well. LASIK is typically used to correct long-sightedness, while SMILE is used to correct near-sightedness. However, there can be variations in your vision that may result in deviations from the norm.

Regardless of which technology is used for treatment, laser surgery aims to change the curvature/shape of the cornea. This ensures that the light is refracted optimally, precisely, and focused on the retina so you can see clearly without glasses.

An ICL implant (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a type of intraocular lens that is implanted in the eye to correct refractive errors, including farsightedness.

The implant is made of a biocompatible collamer. It is a flexible lens that is inserted through a small incision in the eye. An ICL implant sits on top of the natural lens in the eye, whereby the treatment is incredibly gentle and ensures that patients quickly return to normal everyday life (without glasses).

ICL implants are suitable for people whose vision cannot be corrected with LASIK or other forms of laser treatment. They may also be a good choice for people who have a high degree of farsightedness or a thin cornea that is not suitable for laser treatment.

When using ICL implants for the correction of farsightedness, excellent quality of vision and long-term vision correction is achieved. ICL implants are a permanent solution to vision problems and can last for many years. ICL implants are designed to work with the eye's natural anatomy and cause minimal disruption to the eye's structure.

Most patients can return to their normal activities shortly after surgery and will experience a rapid recovery.
